Active and Passive Voice (Perfect tense & modals)
1. When we change a sentence in
the present perfect tense, the past perfect tense or the future perfect tense
from the active voice to the passive voice,
we have to change the verb in these ways:
a)
present perfect:
has/have + been + past participle of verb
Example:
Active: He has encouraged the children to improve their reading speed.
Passive: The children have been encouraged to improve their reading speed.
b)
Past perfect:
had + been + past participle of verb
Example:
Active: Tim’s friend Eddy had told Mrs Lang about Tim’s arrival before I called her.
Passive: Mrs Lang had been told about Tim’s arrival by his friend Eddy before I called her.
c)
Future perfect:
will have + been + past participle of verb
Example:
Active: By Monday next week, our teachers will have marked all our answer scripts.
Passive: By Monday next week, all our answer scripts will have been marked.
2. When we change a sentence with modals such as
can, may or must from the active voice to the passive voice,
we have to change the verb in these ways:
can + be + past participle of verb
may + be + past participle of verb
must + be + past participle of verb
Example:
The price of the house can be estimated by the company.
This problem may be discussed by the committee soon.
The sport equipment room must be locked (by the boys) after the games.
