‘Can’ or ‘could’

What’s the difference between

Can and could

 “There’s nothing I could say to you”

and

“There’s nothing I can say to you.”

 “could” is the past tense but the sentence above is said in the present not in the past.

could” has other meanings and functions besides being the past tense of “can”.

“There’s nothing I could say to you”

is more emphatic than

“There’s nothing I can say to you.”
